Fruit & Café Hosokawa, est. in 1948, is a fruit shop about ten minutes’ walk north of Shimogamo Shrine. Inside, there is a café connected to the shop, where you can dine on parfaits, sandwiches, and juices chock full of fresh, ripe fruits. Our particular favorite is the fruit sandwich filled liberally with seasonal produce. In addition to, of course, eating in, takeout is also a popular option here.
Here is their delectable fruit sandwich!
The beautiful petal-like arrangement of the slices adds to the appeal of this dish. Stuffed with fresh fruits, like strawberries, peaches, bananas, and pineapples, the sandwich is finished off with generous amounts of whipped cream. Contrary to its appearance, this sandwich has a weight to it and is surprisingly filling! The fluffy bread, juicy fruit, and smooth cream together make an exquisite match. This sandwich gets five stars in our book!
We also tried Hosokawa’s mixed juice. This luxurious blended juice is made from milk and a variety of fresh fruits. It’s thick and delicious!
Inside the shop, seasonal fruit is arranged in an appealing display. The mangos, watermelons, and peaches all look terrific. If you’re out and feeling peckish between meals, we recommend picking up a couple for a light, refreshing snack at your hotel.
The next time you visit Shimogamo Shrine, how about taking a little side trip for a tasty fruit sandwich? You won’t regret it!
