Katsukatsu-tonton is a restaurant specializing in tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet), located in the east side of Kyoto Gyoen, along the Kawaramachi-dori street. You will know it by its red walls and round windows, and the name of the shop written in large letters on the side. There are various types of customers, from students to family groups to businessmen who work in the area. It’s a restaurant where you can casually enjoy tonkatsu. There is a set menu of various types of tonkatsu combo meals, so people who worry about wanting to eat this and that will be pleased.Another reason for the restaurant's popularity is that the pickles, barley rice, miso soup and cabbage that come with the meals are all-you-can-eat.
There is a menu with various meals on it, but on this day I had the 'cutlet filet and minced meat cutlet’ meal. As side dishes for the cutlets, I had a large helping of chopped cabbage, and besides that, barley rice, miso soup, and pickles were included.
The cutlet filet(photo left) was deep-fried and crispy, and the meat was tender and delicious. The slightly rough coating also had a good mouth-feel. minced meat cutlet(photo right) is also juicy and delicious.
The pickles and barley rice that come with the combo meal. The rice is served in a box that is brought to the table. Dish out the desired amount yourself.Let's eat! Refills are free, so if you run out, feel free to call the server. Pickles, cabbage and miso soup also come with free refills.
Sauce is provided at the table. On the near side is a pot of dressing for the cabbage, and the big pot on the far side is tonaktsu sauce.
