“Mitsubachi” is a small, charming sweets shop with handwritten entranceway curtains and sign. Although it is a shop set up in an unassuming manner along the streets of Kawaramachi, which is about a 10 minute walk from Demachiyanagi Station, its popularity is tremendous. On weekends, you can catch sight of people lined up in front of the shop before opening time. The look and feel of the shop is charming, with a view of such items as anmitsu and mamekan, all of which have taken time to make. Once the shop opens, it becomes full of customers. You can taste the deliciousness of the sweets within the calm atmosphere of a Japanese style interior decorated with Japanese accessories.
The specialty is handmade Japanese gelatin. It is carefully made by simmering it together with a type of seaweed called “Amakusa”. One of the Japanese gelatin menu items called “Apricot mamekan” is pictured above. Topped with cooked red peas and apricots, you can add brown sugar syrup on top and enjoy. The red peas, which are cooked to plumpness and have a rich flavor and tender texture, and the sweet and sour taste of the apricots gives the gelatin a nice accent. It is simple but rich.
(L) Here we have the “Special apricot shaved ice.” During the hot summer, shaved ice is a refreshing treat. Using a rich apricot syrup, this popular menu item is often sold out before shop closing time. We recommend getting here early if you want to try it.(R) Part of the menu has take out items. If you are unsure what you want to try, why not take a little of
everything and enjoy them back at the hotel.
The interior design is of quiet Japanese taste. The charming accessories and interior are a must-see.
An endless number of customers constantly visit the shop. The sweets take many people prisoner with their deliciousness. By all means, please give it a try.
