Monozukuri ART town (“Craft ART town”)
Monozukuri ART town ("Craft ART town") is an open market started in the fall of 2011. Although this craft market was only begun recently, it is held in the square in front of Kyoto City Hall two to three times a year. As the name suggests, you can find all kinds of paintings, accessories, clothes, stationery, and other goods handmade by artists and designers in this arts and crafts fair. The square in front of City Hall, where the market is held, is the widest street in Kyoto city, so Monozukuri ART Town enjoys a large number of visitors.
We went to the 6th Monozukuri ART town on June 9, 2013. The market was fortunate to have good weather and a great turnout.
(L) Baskets and trinkets woven from multi-colored thread.
(R) Oodles of cute badges with designs on them.
These are handmade ceramics: mugs, teacups, and cute porcupine paperweights, among others, line the shelves.
(L) Pouches with cute patterns. Great for gifts!
(M) Chick coin purses. So fluffy and adorable!
(R) Exquisitely detailed hairbands.
(L) Lifelike pastry-shaped accessories, baked gold to perfection.
(R) Bags with laugh out loud prints.
Stunning glass objets d’art brought in a small crowd to gather around them. We wonder how they were made!
There were too many booths for us to introduce here - 150 stalls in all!
If you have the good fortune of being in Kyoto while Monozukuri ART town is going on, it’s only a hop away, so please stop by and take a look around!
