NarutoTaiyakiHonpo is a chain of stores selling Taiyaki(a fish‐shaped pancake filled with bean jam) based mainly in the Kansai region. At present, they manage around 18 locations. The store’s taiyaki makers put the batter and red-bean filling into 2 kilogram molds and bake them one by one. Today, I went to the Kawaramachi Location in central Kyoto which was opened in February of this year.
This is NarutoTaiyakiHonpo’s taiyaki. The one on top is 'Kuro-an', the bottom is 'Narutokintoki-imo'. The 'Kuro-an' uses the highest quality adzuki beans from Tokachi in Hokkaido. The 'Narutokintoki-imo' likewise uses only the best sweet potatoes, Narutokintoki, to be made into the filling.
Both are chock-full of filling. The sweetness of the 'Kuro-an' is subtle. Red bean paste, as expected, is the way to go for taiyaki. 'Narutokintoki-imo' packs a lot of the potato flavor and is also delectable. For those who are not fond of red bean, this one’s for you.
The store is in a shopping area in the center of Kyoto. It’s best to get them freshly made, so you can definitely try them as a snack while you’re shopping.
