RAKUZA is a new guest house that was opened in December of 2009 by the guest house WARAKU-AN located near Heian-Jingu Shrine. Just like WARAKU-AN, the building is a renovated traditional 'machiya' which exudes a charming and peaceful Japanese aesthetic. For those that want to stay in traditional Japanese style lodging after having trekked all the way to Kyoto, this guest house is perfect. It is located in Gion, the center of Kyoto. Nearby are Kennin-ji temple and Rokuharamitsu-ji temple. If you go just a little further, Yasaka-jinja shrine, Kodai-ji temple, and Kiyomizu-dera temple are also within walking distance. It’s an extremely convenient location for sightseeing and shopping with Pontocho and its bars and restaurants lined up north to south on the west bank of the Kamo River. Kyoto’s biggest shopping arcade, ShijoKawaramachi is also walking distance from the guest house. When staying in Kyoto, it would be a waste not to lodge at RAKUZA.
RAKUZA was originally used as a tea house for a hundred years before being renovated and reopened as a guest house. The owner and staff did almost all the renovation by hand. Furthermore, in order to bring about that machiya atmosphere, the restoration of the interior walls and painting of wood was undertaken using traditional techniques.
There is a beautiful courtyard garden within the building. As you relax and look out on the garden, all the stresses of travel simply melt away.
The tasteful lighting and furniture also helps to bring out the oriental atmosphere. During your stay, be sure to check out the building’s fine ornamentation and the illustrations on the sliding screens.
This is a common use salon. You can feel at home relaxing here, make travel plans, make friends with the other lodgers, and much more.
There are 5 private rooms and also a women-only dormitory (Men are to choose from the private rooms). This is a photo of the deluxe private room which can house four guests. There is a door that opens out onto a sweeping panorama of the Kamogawa river!
On the left is the only Western style room. This is for those guests who strongly prefer a bed. On the right is the dormitory, which houses three guests at most. The room can be divided by screen partitions.
