Ryokaku is a café that opened in November 2012, that specializes in curry. The café is actually operated by a store “Hara Ryokaku” that deals in a spice “Kuroshichimi”, which has been passed in Kyoto for over 300 years. Despite the fact that Hara Ryokaku is famous for its traditional recipe, the dish they are now serving are far from conventional. By cleverly combining their original curry spice with a modern menu, it seems like the store is hoping to reach a fresh generation of spice-lovers. Who knows what kind of curry they’ll come up with? We are looking forward to it!

“Original curry topped with sautéed Kyoto kujo leek and chicken tenpura”
Since the ingredients include vegetables and fruits, the curry is refreshing, light and fruity and followed up by the profound taste of the spice which spreads out in different layers, starting from mild sweetness and bit by bit, slowly turning into hot spiciness. The Kujo leeks also provide a crispy, crunchy texture which goes well with the curry.
Besides the dishes, various kinds of spices are also provided in the store and are recommended by the staffs as a must try. These different spices enrich the taste of the dishes and again, verify Ryokaku’s Knowledge of in traditional spices.
The outside of the café is designed to look like a classic Kyoto-style building. But interior is colorful, stylish, and modern. Their curry is neither Japanese nor Indian. It is its own unique category. This uniqueness is why we highly recommend Ryokaku. It is definitely worth trying.
