Tofuku-ji temple is headquarters of the Tofukuji branch of Rinzai Zen Buddhism, located in Higashiyama-ku in Kyoto city. its name, "Tofukuji", is a combination of one chalacter from the names of two temples in Nara, Todai-ji temple and Kofuku-ji temple. the temple was established in 1236 by Kujo Michiie, the imperial chancellor of the Kamakura period. he instructed priest Enni Ben'en(1201 - 1280), a deeply learned monk with years of Zen practice in China under the eminent monk Wuzhun Shifan, to be founding priest. the temple was burned down and was rebuilt in the 15th century. its main gate, the 22 meter high Sanmon, is the oldest Zen main gate in all of its kind and is also regarded as the most outstanding among all Zen temple gates in Japan. it is a National Treasure of Japan. it is also one of the renowned Kyoto Gozan (Five Great zen Temples of Kyoto). Kyoto Gozan : special rank - Nanzen-ji temple, 1st rank - Tenryji temple, 2nd rank - Shokoku-ji temple, 3rd rank - Kennin-ji temple, 4th rank - Tofuku-ji temple, 5th rank - Manju-ji temple.
Especially, the seamless integration between the checkered surface made with stone and moss and the satsuki flower combinations makes it a symbolic garden of Tofuku-ji Temple.
