Yumihikihajime(Archery Contest) is a famous, early spring tradition in Japan, which is celebrated at Sanjusangendo temple every year in January.
it is a competition whereby arrows are released under the eaves of the west side of the temple, from south to north towards a particular target. On this day, many young people, who will be coming of age that year, gather from all around Japan to have a go at this bow and arrow competition. In particular, the ladies look glamorous in their fine clothes as they take on this challenge with a radiant look of great intensity!
Sanjusangendo temple is the venue for this competition. On the day of this event, visitors are allowed on the grounds free-of-charge.
The tournament is held at the back of the temple(the west side). Now let’s go to the viewing stands.
The tournament is held on the side of Sanjusangendo temple’s temple, famous for its great length. The distance to the targets is approximately 120m. Seen from here, it looks rather far!
There are also competitions for veteran archers. They do show a magnificent sense of presence, don’t they?
On this day, the east side is full of stalls selling a variety of goods. After watching the competition, have fun doing some shopping or enjoying some food as you explore the grounds!
